Post-Processing for Food Photography, or How to Fix Almost Anything with Software
Ever taken a food photo that you thought was perfect on your camera screen but when it was blown up to computer-size, you noticed the tofu looked green or the background was too distracting or the plate was splattered with unattractive globs of sauce? Don’t despair! Using inexpensive photo editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom, it’s easy to make less-than-perfect photos look flawless. In this presentation/demonstration, Susan will show you how she easily adjusts color, contrast, and exposure and gets rid of blemishes in her own photos, and you’ll learn tricks you can use to make your own food photos shine.

Susan didn’t quite know what a blog was when she started FatFree Vegan Kitchen in 2006, but she quickly grew addicted to sharing her cooking successes and failures and building an online vegan community. Evidently she succeeded, because her food... Read More →

Are you ready to get down and get crafty? Working with a recipe brought from home, each person in this workshop will draw and/or design a page for their own recipe, and then we'll assemble all the pages into one ready-to-print master copy. We'll have pens, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, and fun! You don't need to be a creative genius or a master artist—fun clip art and other ideas for decorating your page will be in great supply. After the workshop, Amey will take the master copy to a printer, and by the end of the VVC weekend, each participant will receive several printed editions of the 2015 VVC Goes to Austin Zine to keep, share, trade, or offer in online giveaways.

Facing Failing Health as a Vegan
“As a committed ethical vegan, I never imagined that I would doubt the safety of my diet . . . until I got sick.” Sayward’s experience of facing failing health as a vegan, of the subsequent guilt and shame and anger she felt while being a sick vegan, and of eventually regaining her health—while staying vegan!—has given her a unique perspective. None of us plan to get sick, and luckily, most of us never will. But some vegans do, and as fellow vegans, it's important that we are able to offer a supportive, non-blaming or -shaming community. So let's talk about that!

Preventing Ex-Vegans
Research in the fields of nutrition, social science, and health behavior provide important lessons about why many vegans return to eating animal foods. The findings also offer useful information about how we can prevent lapses and encourage a sustainable commitment to veganism.  This presentation draws upon that research to design simple strategies for bloggers, authors, activists, and others who want to create the types of messages that help people stay vegan.

Pretty much everyone has an app these days, but where does that leave you? As content creators/facilitators, let’s look at what makes a decent app, what’s involved in making it, and most importantly, how to make it sustainable. Whether that’s building it yourself or hiring someone, let’s get you going. There’ll be some snazzy charts because, you know, I’m a professional. Probably also a picture or two of my cat because, you know, I’m a dork. Best case, you learn something. Worst case, you get to mock my accent (which is still sort of a best case—win/win!).

“When I was a kid, every summer I went to a really great farm camp, where we got to feed the pigs and chickens, visit the sheep and goats, brush the horses, and take the cows out to pasture in the morning and bring them back in the evening. Camp was just a week or two each year, but it was long enough for me to fall in love with my farm animal friends.” Veg since 14, and vegan for 15 years, that’s 27 years of meat-free... Read More →

Ethics of Vegan Dining & Boozing
Are you a "don't ask, don't tell" vegan when dining out? Or do you pepper the wait staff with a million questions? Do you avoid all wine and beers not listed on Barnivore, or do your ethics go out the window when there's free booze at an art show? We'll even look at vegan products and discuss ethics around issues like palm oil, fair trade, and whether or not we use vegan products made by companies that are owned by non-vegan conglomerates. In this class, we'll have an open discussion about our personal ethics, and weigh the pros and cons of how those ethics may or may not help or hinder the spread of veganism.
